Natural Gas and Electric Water Heaters The conventional gas and electric water heaters are very similar. The gas water heaters have gas burners for the heating elements and the electric water heaters have electrical heating elements. The most common models are 40 or 50 gallons tanks. The water is heated to 120 to 140 degrees and held in the insulated steel storage tank. The water is continuously reheated to the temperature setting until used. An annual flush of these units to remove sediment is recommended and should be done by a licensed plumber. If you decide not to have it done by a licensed plumber, be sure to take all the proper safety precautions with the gas and electrical connections.
